Calling all startups solving Africa’s problems and achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Startupbootcamp AfriTech, in partnership with BonBillo, will be hosting the Cape Town Impact Bootcamp in January 2020.

From 4 January 2020, entrepreneurs solving social, health, educational and environmental problems will gain access to a proven framework for rapidly designing and testing a solution, mentorship from top advisors and industry experts, a vibrant workspace, as well as exciting local excursions.

Taking place over two weeks, the Bootcamp will kick off with a tour of Cape Town and its townships to help participants understand the local context and its challenges. During their time at the Bootcamp, startups will design their solution and validate it with customers. They will also define their value proposition and hone their customer acquisition strategy. Plus, they will get to work on their business model, develop clear social impact metrics and come up with their pitch for the Demo Day on the 17th of January where they will share their solutions with potential investors. Startups with traction will be considered for an investment of $2,000 to $3,000 in exchange for 0.5% to 0.75% equity.

It won’t be all work and no play, however as the teams will get to enjoy tours of the Mother City’s heritage sites such as Robben Island, Cape Point, Boulders Beach and Table Mountain.

Throughout the Bootcamp, teams will receive guidance from Startupbootcamp AfriTech and BonBillo’s expert mentors and learn from successful local entrepreneurs and corporate innovation leaders.

SBC AfriTech Chief Investment Officer and Co-Founder, Zachariah George, says: “Africa’s population is set to rise to 2.5 billion by the middle of this century—more than China and India combined. What’s more, according to United Nations projections, the continent could have a population of 4 billion people or more by 2100, meaning that Africa alone would account for more than a third of the world’s population. How Africa’s population evolves and how the continent’s economies develop will affect the rest of the world. Already, startups worldwide are working to address the challenges we face, such as unemployment, food scarcity, poverty and gender inequality. We need to harness these innovators’ talents and accelerate the development of their solutions to achieve a better, more sustainable future for all, faster.”

Entrepreneurs interested in solving Africa’s problems or expanding into Africa are encouraged to apply, as are university students who are curious about exploring a social impact startup focused on Africa.

Applications close on the 15th of December 2019. The cost for international applicants is $5,000 and includes accommodation, rent of the co-working space, event attendance and excursions. However, it excludes flights to Cape Town, daily food, commutes, the optional Kruger Park Safari and Social Entrepreneurship Internship extension. The programme is offered to South African entrepreneurs at a special price of $950 which excludes housing as well as daily food and commutes.
