International honour for NCPC-SA Director

Director of the National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa (NCPC-SA), Ndivhuho Raphulu, has been elected as the Sub-Saharan Africa representative on the executive committee of RECPnet, a global network of NCPCs facilitated by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and its environment programme. The NCPC-SA is the dti’s key industrial sustainability programme, hosted by the CSIR Strategic Initiatives Implementation Unit (SIIU).

The main objective of RECPnet is to create a platform within the UN to facilitate resource efficiency and cleaner production (RECP) awareness creation and capacity building at an international level. RECPnet furthermore strives to enable knowledge management (i.e. generation and sharing) and benchmarking on corporate governance among NCPCs worldwide.

The network also facilitates business opportunities between member countries. It mobilises funding for RECP projects in member countries with limited financial resources and multi-country projects within the different continents. In addition, RECPnet will play an important role at two key events on the international sustainability calendar − CoP17 in Durban later this year and Rio20 in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012, where the findings of CoP17 will be presented and progress against the Millennium Development Goals reviewed.

Ndivhuho was voted into this position by the 12 countries on the African Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production. His leadership role in this domain in South Africa and Africa is expected to open new avenues for collaboration across borders and provide support to the growing number of NCPCs in the region.
