Dr Makaziwe Makamba

Dr Makaziwe Makamba is a trailblazing and enthusiastic researcher from East London. She holds a
Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science from University of South Africa (UNISA). She has a
Masters of Science degree in Computer Science from University of Fort Hare. She did her Bachelor’s
degree and Hons from the same University. Her areas of interest include but are not limited to the
following: AI, Cloud Computing, System Integration, IoT, E-Services and ICT4D.
Dr Makamba is a Research Expert in 4IR – Computer Science at Department of Communication and
Digital Technologies (DCDT). She believes that technology is the only weapon that presents
opportunities to eradicate poverty, inequalities and unemployment especially in this digital era.
Makaziwe is a researcher at heart, she received a best paper award from International Conference on
Society and Information Technologies (ICSIT 2016),that was held in Orlando, Florida in USA. She is
also a program committee member of the ICSIT. She has published and presented  papers in both
international and local conferences. She is also a part-time lecturer and supervisor for B.Tech students
at the Tshwane University of Technology(TUT).  She believes in inspiring and motivating young
women to take part and lead in previously male dominating disciplines such as STEM. She believes
that marginalized areas can be radically transformed by introducing cutting-edge technologies and
technology enablers. She believes that supporting women in STEM is the only way to close the digital
gender gap and  inequality. She has founded a Non-Profit-Organization (NPO) called Rise Science in
2019, that is focusing on equipping people with essential skills such as computer science.
